Recently Alajuela has become the spot for manufacturing companies, particularly within the state’s free trade zones. Between the years of 2004 and 2006, Alajuela increased about 27% in foreign investors with 60 companies settling in the province. Rich Heritage
The international Airport in Alajuela was named after Juan Santamaria who is a national hero in Costa Rica from Alajuela. Farms and coffee plantations surround the city, and it remains the principal trade center for cattle, sugar, and coffee. Most residents live in the city nicknamed “The city of Mangoes” and every Saturday morning residents gather for the largest outdoor farmers’ market in the country for fresh produce, local music, handicrafts or some simple conversation in the central park. Sugar cane is also a big produce in this town, used for making Dulce, an unrefined sugar, and Guaro, a sugarcane liquor served in any local refinery. Communities like this are everywhere, and they are bringing more expats now than ever for this comforting Latino life.
Ecological Quests
Probably one of the best attractions and most exciting activities can be take place at the Arenal Volcano National Park. Numerous thermal springs, horseback riding, hiking, and wildlife viewing are some of the few things to do in this area. Another incredible sightseeing place is the craters of Poás Volcano National Park, home to more than 70 different species of birds. The Venado Caverns, also in the area, was formed by ancient underground river, now housing bats, monochrome frogs, fish and marina fossils.
Modern Developments & Construction
The expansion of the El Diquís Hydroeletric Project helped construction in Alajuela double in 2012. This dam is planned to be the largest hydroelectric dam in Central America, it will generate electricity for more than one million consumers. The increases of residential construction come in second from the 152 percent increase of construction in Alajuela. Commercial construction is in the top in the industry of construction. The Juan Santamaria International Airport is the closest for access in Alajuela.
