Rich Heritage

The international Airport in Alajuela was named after Juan Santamaria who is a national hero in Costa Rica from Alajuela. Farms and coffee plantations surround the city, and it remains the principal trade center for cattle, sugar, and coffee. Most residents live in the city nicknamed “The city of Mangoes” and every Saturday morning residents gather for the largest outdoor farmers’ market in the country for fresh produce, local music, handicrafts or some simple conversation in the central park. Sugar cane is also a big produce in this town, used for making Dulce, an unrefined sugar, and Guaro, a sugarcane liquor served in any local refinery.
